This project is a continuation of the field research and artistic exchange between artist Pham Ngoc Tram and embroidery artisans from various regions of Vietnam. In 2019, Pham Ngoc Tram and artisan Vu Thanh Luan collaborated in an exhibition showcasing Vietnamese embroidery in France, which sparked ongoing discussions and thematic residencies between the two. In 2023, they serendipitously discovered the preserved embroidery tools and samples of Vu Thanh Long, the father of Vu Thanh Luan. Artisan Vu Thanh Long had founded a renowned embroidery workshop in Saigon-Gia Dinh, which gained the admiration of the local elite due to its craftsmanship and prestige. In 1954, due to historical upheavals, he returned to Northern Vietnam, leaving his workshop’s archives of embroidery tools, samples, and notebooks untouched in Saigon. This project involves cataloging, photographing, and documenting the embroidery samples and tools left by Vu Thanh Long from that era.
