Art Exhibition “Inheritance”

In the main hall of the building at 19 Le Thanh Tong, the main building of the former Indochina University, now known as Vietnam National University, two works of art “The Four Teachers” will be displayed: portraits of artists Victor Tardieu and To Ngoc Van, created by sculptor Tran Quoc Thinh. Victor Tardieu was the founder and first rector of the Indochina College of Fine Arts, which was part of Indochina University since 1924. He made significant contributions to the development of Vietnamese fine arts. Meanwhile, To Ngoc Van is recognized as the rector of the Fine Arts College under the University of Vietnam (Democratic Republic of Vietnam) in 1945, and he played a crucial role in elevating Vietnamese art to new heights during the early phase of the revolutionary art movement. These two statues are placed in empty spaces next to the statues of renowned scientists Le Van Thiem and Nguyen Nhu Kon Tum, creating a dialogue between figures who have made significant contributions to Vietnamese culture, science, and education.

In the hallway on the ground floor, before ascending the ancient stairs, there is an exhibition showcasing the results of artist Pham Ngoc Tram's research, collection, and experimentation with Vietnamese embroidery heritage from the Indochina period. The unique feature of Indochina embroidery is its rich indigenous materials. Silk and silk threads from craft villages in the delta region, hand-dyed color palettes made from natural materials such as leaves, tubers, and roots of local plants, along with traditional dyeing techniques and compositions, create color harmonies that vividly express the consciousness, aesthetics, and rich soul of Vietnamese culture.

In addition, there is an exhibition of ceramic works titled "Blue Enamel Inspiration" by artist Nguyen Thu Thuy. These pieces were created by drawing inspiration from the ancient capital of Bat Trang's blue-glazed ceramics, featuring large vases and plates adorned with stylized motifs of vines, chrysanthemums, peonies, cranes, phoenix and lotus flowers. These motifs have been carefully researched to create a distinct style while inheriting the classical beauty of Bat Trang blue-glazed ceramics. Notably, some details in the works evoke the decorative patterns on the dome of the old Indochina University building, bringing harmony and unity to the overall emotional impact of the collection displayed in this location.

The exhibition "Indochina Sense" is curated by artist Nguyen The Son, lecturer of visual arts, the School of Interdisciplinary Sciences and Arts, Vietnam National University, Hanoi.
